The Sankofa Communist Party is a research and development Marxist organization focused on recording and observing the socialistic instincts and forms of socialist organizing rising in America within human beings, workplaces, communities, and movements. We conduct praxis and develop practical tools based on our findings into generalized reports and analyses for socialism. Founded in Minneapolis of January 2026, by a group of Black, Brown, and Indigenous women, our organizational mission is to advocate for and support the achievement of socialism: a system in which every human being is guaranteed the necessities of life in America and on the international scale.
Sankofa came into existence because we recognized that the world is in a profound crisis. A handful of billionaires and rising trillionaires hoard wealth sufficient to end global poverty many times over, while the vast majority of humanity is denied basic needs such as housing, food, clean water, healthcare, and education. This intolerable inequality is not an accident but the direct result of capitalism—an unreformable system that must be replaced by socialism.
To achieve our mission, we are joining together interconnected networks of working-class organizations, individuals and communities who have already begun, or taken an interest in, waging class struggle to win democratic reforms—such as the reduced working week, universal healthcare, free childcare, rent control, a $25/hour minimum wage, no support for genocide, defunding the police, and more—and who are interested in extending that struggle toward achieving a genuine socialist democracy with worker councils. We understand these reforms not as a final program but as points of struggle that, when fought for collectively, expose the inability of capitalism to meet human needs and build the confidence and organization necessary for its abolition.
Because of this, our work is guided by two interconnected programs. Our immediate program focuses on demands that are winnable in the current period—reforms that address urgent needs and build the organization, consciousness, and confidence of the working class. Our transitional program represents the complete systemic transformation of capitalism into socialism: expropriating the billionaires and trillionaires, abolishing capitalism, ending all wars, cancelling all debt, ending neo-colonialism, carrying out full social justice, reducing the working week, implementing guaranteed free healthcare and education, affordable and free housing, high-quality jobs, and the confederation of banks, key industries, and Fortune 500 companies under complete democratic worker-state economies. These programs are not separate. The fight for immediate demands is how we build the capacity to win the transitional ones, and the transitional program gives the immediate program it’s revolutionary direction.
Within our mission we have a core focus on social and cultural revolution, which seeks to end racism, sexism, gender-based violence, xenophobia, homophobia, and transphobia, and to challenge capitalist ideologies and bourgeois philosophy. We understand the working class to be multiracial, international, and united by its shared exploitation under capitalism. At the same time, we recognize that within this class, People of the Global Majority (PGM)—Black people, Indigenous people, and Brown people—have been subjected to the most intense and sustained forms of oppression due to imperialism, colonialism, slavery, and racialized super-exploitation. For this reason, our mission affirms that the liberation struggles of the most oppressed layers of the working class must play a leading role in the struggle against capitalism and the ruling class. This is not a departure from class unity but a deepening of it. History has shown that when the most oppressed are organized, empowered, and placed at the forefront of class struggle, the entire working class advances. The struggle against international and racial oppression is therefore not separate from the class struggle—it is one of its central driving forces.
Our party offers a creative, scientific, and political outlet for workers committed to revolutionary change. We develop disciplined Marxists and organizers from all backgrounds, skillsets, races, sexes, and genders through collective study, research, principled organizing, and practical struggle. Our work focuses on Marxist methodology, direct observation of struggles, on-the-ground organizing, and the production of accessible information that helps workers deepen their own understanding of class struggle and connect it to a broader revolutionary project.
We aim to utilize our work to contribute to the formation of a mass workers' party—not by declaring ourselves as such, but by building the networks, clarity, shared visions, principles, and practice that will allow such a party to emerge from the actual struggles of the working class. Such a party can only be guided by class independence—refusing subordination to any capitalist party or institution—and a genuine workers' program. It must be capable of uniting workers across divisions imposed by capitalism and demonstrating how society is currently fighting to be recognized as a society for the needs of the people and not for the profits of the ruling class.
We honor the revolutionary legacy of the Black Panther Party and all the Marxists who came before us while standing as an independent organization shaped by the conditions of today. We carry forward the wisdom of Chairperson Fred Hampton, who taught that "you can't fight racism with racism," and Lenin, who taught that "one of the basic principles of Marxism is the need for a concrete analysis of concrete conditions." We extend this insight by recognizing that a system built on both class exploitation and racial oppression cannot be defeated through class reductionism alone or political bureaucracy. Only a conscious, organized unity of the working class—armed with a clear understanding of their relationship to production and how racism functions as a pillar of capitalism—can bring about genuine liberation for the masses.
We struggle with roots in the revolutionary traditions and self-determination of oppressed peoples, and with hands joined in international solidarity with workers of all races, nations, and backgrounds, each committed to the liberation of the other. Our mission is nothing less than the abolition of exploitation and oppression worldwide and the realization of a socialist workers' democracy in our lifetimes.
